Engaging Virtual FIRST LEGO League Teams in Hands-On, Minds-on Core Values Activities

This past week, LET’S GO Baltimore launched several of our virtual FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams to serve over 100 bright Baltimore city students. As teams prepare for the upcoming competition this year, the FLL Core Values (discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork, and fun) are not only crucial for the competition, but for developing soft skills necessary for workforce development. To help students understand these core values necessary for the competition, LET’S GO has built a core value activity box for each student. The activity boxes consist of curated hands on materials to go along with 16 core value activities.

Through these activities, skills such as conflict resolution, teamwork, effective communication, critical thinking, listening, and more are demonstrated and practiced. How important are these skills? According to Afterschool Alliance, 93% of employers consider a soft skill such as communication essential but only find it in less the half its candidates1. Through these core value activities, LET’S GO looks to build upon an already great foundation for students to take into their future STEM careers!

Our partner staff like Ana from the Lakeland Community and STEAM Center have been awesome helping hands for materials distribution this fall!
